Introduction
Food is responsible for 24% of the Diamond’s total ecological footprint and 17% of the carbon footprint.
This figure is consistent with research undertaken by WRAP [1] who found that, around 20% of our climate change emissions are related to the production, processing, transportation and storage of food, but we are throwing away a third of all the food we buy. According to WRAP, If we stopped wasting all this good food, we could have a huge impact on the environment, the equivalent of taking 1 in 5 cars off UK roads.
Wasting food wastes money and contributes to our footprint.
Case Studies
Love food hate waste
WRAP's research in detail.
Good on the public plate
'Good food on the public plate' is a project by Sustain, the sustainable food campaigning organisation, to help public bodies procure more healthy, local and sustainable food.
Brixton fruit and nut map
The Brixton fruit and nut map is a web based map of south London with pins put in by volunteers showing locations and details of trees accessible to the public to pick fruit and nuts.
East Oxford farmers market
Farmers and community markets, such as that in East Oxford, are being established throughout the region and proving popular with residents. They can help stimulate the local economy, are less affected by global food price shocks, reduce packaging waste, encourage healthy eating and reduce food miles.
Key Priorities
- Reduce food waste
- Encourage purchase of fresh, local food
- Encourage diets with less meat, especially beef, and dairy products, which have the highest footprints in relation to their nutritional content
